The Himalayan wolf is basal to all extant gray wolf subspecies. It has been suggested by several Indian biologists for recognition as a critically endangered canine species. The government added the Himalayan wolf to the endangered species list in 1998. On the Wikipedia, it's not evaluated like the Florida panther and they are both endangered. It might be a subspecies of the gray wolf.
