The passenger pigeon or wild pigeon was the most numerous bird on the planet. It was a North American bird and with a total population of 5,000,000,000 individuals. People killed them for food and sport and since there were so many birds, you wouldn't have to aim by shooting them. The last wild specimen died in 1900 and the last captive one was a female named Martha died in the Cincinnati zoo, Ohio in September 1st, 1914.
