The African civet is the largest representative of the African Vivveridae. The largest types of Vivverids are the fossa, white tailed mongoose, African civet, bear-cat, spotted hyena, and giant forest genet. Vivverids are native to 3 continents: Africa, Asia, and Europe. In Europe, the common genet is native to France, Spain, and Portugal. Its closest living relatives are the Congo water civet and Asian palm civet.
