California grizzly bear

The California grizzly bear (Ursus Arctos Californicus) is an extinct subspecies of bear which ranged from San Francisco down to San Diego and inland to Nevada, Southern Canada, and Northwest Arizona. Its only reward was that it was California's state animal and was declared extinct in 1924. In 1964, the Mexican grizzly went extinct but it could still be alive. It started to be the state animal since the 1950's and ecologists have debated the reintroduction of grizzlies back to California. Its closest relative is the Kodiak bear.
