The Cantabrian brown bear refers to a population of European brown bears living in the Cantabrian mountains of Spain. They have been introduced to Africa by the Romans as a proxy for the extinct Atlas bear. The European brown bear was the brown bear subspecies that was once native to the British isles until 1000 AD. Wolves and lynxes also used to live there and the reintroduction probably starts this year.
