North African elephant

The North African elephant is an extinct subspecies of African bush elephant native to North Africa. It was probably a separate subspecies that has become extinct in Roman times. It is also known as the North African forest elephant, Carthaginian elephant, and Atlas elephant. This picture of a North African elephant was taken at the Roman mosaic at Ostia Antica, Italy. There is another really cool extinct elephant called the Syrian elephant.
