The Japanese otter (Lutra Nippon) is a carnivoran of the family Mustelidae. As the specific name suggests, it was once widespread throughout Japan. Perhaps due to habitat destruction or reduction or its food sources, it is now extinct and it's like the Japanese river otter (Lutra Lutra Whiteleyi). The otters of Japan are subspecies of the Eurasian or European otter of Eurasia and North Africa.
